Support for Migrants In St Helens

John Perry of Focus Employment Hub Limited a social enterprise based in St Helen’s has obtained funding to provide support for migrants living in the St Helen’s Borough. To provide emotional and practical support with the focus being on employment. The aim will be to provide tailored support to a small group of individuals on a 1-2-1 or in a group setting to realise their potential and to help them to achieve their personal and professional goals. John is a qualified personal and vocational counsellor, and an experienced trainer on equality and diversity issues. Throughout his personal and professional life John has advocated for disabled people, their families and the wider community to promote social and economic inclusion.
St Helen’s is an area which currently faces high levels of social deprivation including high unemployment levels, greater prevalence of mental health issues and lower life expectancy rates than the national average.

Refugees and asylum seekers have an overall increase in psychological ill-health, which is not an inevitable consequence of conflict and trauma but which also reflects the socio-political condition faced by host countries. Improving these conditions improves mental health outcomes. Migrants are at a high risk of homelessness and may be suffering from Ptsd which impacts detrimentally on mental health and part of this project is to assist migrants to find counselling and life coaching were appropriate. Many stated that they are seen only through their ethnicity and cultural background rather than what they can do and increasingly struggle with lack of self-worth, perceived loss of skills, and social anxiety and isolation. They are not able to navigate the services and system they will need to access in order to gain fulfilling lives

The project will deliver the following:
• Emotional and practical support
• Providing a listening ear in a confidential and non-threatening environment
• Help with college/job applications/volunteering
• CV writing
• Signposting to other services
• Counselling/Advocacy/Life-coaching
• Job seeking
• Holistic – Reiki/Reflexology

The project will commence on Wednesday 15th January 2020 at The Oxford Room, The Hope Centre, Atherton Street, St Helens, WA10 2DT at 12.30-3.30 pm. Tea and coffee will be provided.
