The Wonky Garden

We are based at Ditton Community Centre in Widnes, and operate all year round, focussing on improving physical and mental health, building confidence, supporting isolation and creating community connections. Since forming in 2017, The Wonky Garden has grown from strength to strength, transforming a neglected strip of land into a much loved asset designed by and for the community with hands on involvement of many individuals and groups across Halton. Community and nature are at the heart of everything we do and volunteers work tirelessly to maintain and develop beautiful and productive spaces for all to enjoy whist focussing low carbon and chemical free methods to enrich biodiversity and support wildlife. The gardens are about half an acre and are divided into three areas; a flower therapy garden, children’s garden and edibles/cut flower allotment. We support nature based therapy, horticulture and food education to groups within and beyond the Halton community. In addition to hosting and facilitating so many groups, support is extended through gifting an abundance of produce; our edibles are gifted to local food banks/social supermarkets and cut flowers bring a cheer to those in need. Examples of some of our group activities include: • Growing edibles which we gift to a local social supermarket/café and foodbank. • Harvesting cut flowers and creating bouquets with young visitors which are gifted across the community. • Creating and delivering horticulture, carpentry and work experience based curriculums. • Hosting lunch and flower therapy sessions to elderly and vulnerable groups. • Delivering Japanese ‘Ikebana’ flower arranging workshops.
